The F18 represents a major market for Ullman Sails, a constantly evolving product always up to date. Sail plans are developed in close collaboration with mast producers, sailors and boat producers in order to have the ideal sail to fit each specific boat.

In 2006, the Class updated the measurement rules, changing the construction of both the mainsail and the jib. The new mainsail rule limited the head width of the sail, thus restricting sail area distribution.

As a result, all F-18 mainsails on the market have become very similar.

The new jib rule simplified the boat by removing the furling system and requiring the jib to have full length battens. The full length battens were a marked improvement as the change increased both the stability and durability of the sail.

Research and Sail Testing

In anticipation for the 2006 rule change, our sailmakers spent considerable time testing and developing new designs and construction techniques.  As a result, our sail designs immediately performed at maximum efficiency within the new rules

Main

The F18 represents a major market for Ullman Sails, a constantly evolving product always up to date. Sail plans are developed in close collaboration with mast producers, sailors and boat producers in order to have the ideal sail to fit each specific boat.

Jib

Like all other sails, jib has a perimeter measured to fit the front triangle of each specific boat:

The area is always maximum with specific attention to:

  • right clew angle

  • as High aspect as possible

  • foot of the sail in line with the foot of the main

  • window positioned and sizes for correct view;

  • leech profile matching the main/jib slot

  • full battens especially developed for F18 jibs, tapered and with the right stiffness to properly cover the widest wind range

  • tack ring attach to properly swing through tacks

The sail is radial using Contender Apen06-3mil cloth which is available in white or smoke colours.

Gennaker

Clew height is calculated to suit the standard ratchet position however we still recommend testing the barbers.
The sail has luff line for knockling entry control.  It is produced in nylon not siliconed, superkote 80 (especially produced for radial constructions) which has lately replaced superkote75. Upon request it can also be produced in polyester.

The sail is supplied already holmenkolled.

The latest improvements made on the sail are on the panel lay out, it has increased the number of panels which grants the loads to be better distributed increasing the sail life. The corner reinforcing were redesigned for a better load support.

Battens

Battens are available for the sails in our online store.
